We had a pretty busy last few weeks, travelled to Edmonton to look at potential markets and came home with some orders and some very nice wood to work with. I built a mantle piece out of Hawthorne wood that was salvaged from the owner's front garden of their new condo and got some Russian olive wood that was destined for the land fill. I built three matching benches, delivered the mantle and benches, and brought home about 375 board feet of salvage slabs recovered from Knights inlet BC where they had been holding up a float lodge since 1940. The wood has Teredo worm holes and is very cool. These slabs are supposed to become a patio dining table and four coffee table. I'll post pictures when I'm done. I'm also doing some turning on the lathe with Russian olive and mystery wood salvaged from the dump. I am making Jack o lantern porch lights for halloween. I went on Kijiji and posted my skull chair. I have recieved inquiries and will hopefully be building more soon. I guess my plate is pretty full and I had better get back to work. Mike russian olive I just found posts I thought I had posted in my drafts. I've been pretty busy. I completed a Mission style solid oak bed and I just delivered a set of four small stools to Heritage Nursery in Nakusp. I found some unfinished projects from before the shop move and I'll get on to them, including 3 plant stands. Bill and Carla want some more turned or carved bowls so my work is cut out for me. I plan on making a couple of porch rockers and maybe a flip out step stool of my own design.
Finished my order of oak dining table, bench and lazy susan. Also the mixed species coffee table set. Made a twelve hour drive to deliver and then twelve hours back. Got home and the next day I got sick with the "Itises". Tonsilitis, sinusitis and bronchitis. Feeling better and getting on with some re-finishing and garden furniture.
I'm waiting on some hardware and in the time being I'm thinking of a variety of benches. All for now more to come. Mike
Just did some paperwork. New business cards, sales tags and poster. I'm not too quick at this and have to get going now as I have sat long enough to get a leg cramp. Got the Oak Bench glued together today. Now I'll see how my fumed oak finish worked out on my sample pieces. I've never tried it before so its all learning. Oak fumed in amonia is supposed to go to a nice brown like craftsman style furniture. The finish is a chemical change to the wood and not just a surface stain. From what I've read on the subject, the best results are on European oak and some North American oak goes kind of greenish instead of brown. I'll get out to the shop and see how it turned out.
Later, I'll head down to Heritage Nursery, Nakusp B.C. and deliver my most recent Hand Carved Burl Bowls. All for now, I'll let you know the results of my experiment and post some photos of the bench when it is done. Mike Finally got the Coffee Tables done. They posed a few challenges I hadn't anticipated when I took on the order but I think they worked out in the end. After all, for some one like me, each different project teaches me something I wasn't aware of when I first planned. I guess 'that which doesn't kill you makes you stronger' or in this case, better able to see potential issues on the next job, so its all good.
Hand Carved Cedar Burl Bowl, 16in x 13in x 6in Hand Carved Fir Burl Bowl 21in x 12in x 4in Well back to work today. Some more photos of Burl Bowls I just finished. Feeling better after a good sleep so back to the tables. Saw something I wasn't happy with so I'll correct that and hope to photograph the tables later today. All for now
Mike A bit of a slow day today. Not much going right. The coffee maker had a melt down and spewed coffee and grounds all around forcing a major clean up and a cleaning cycle on the machine before some caffiene could be made and consumed.
I slept badly, must have lain wrong and my back is messed up with nerve pain all down my leg. I know what it is but it just has to go away on its own. Its too cold in the shop to apply more finish to projects even if I could move around freely. I have two Hand Carved Burl Bowls finished but I have to go to Nelson for a dental appointment so I cannot deliver them to Heritage Nursery, Nakusp B.C. On the plus side, the coffee tables are finished and I'll post photos tomorrow. Too sore and too late to get photos today. Also while I'm in Nelson I'm picking up some plants for Heritage Nursery from Georama Nursery. I've put plant stands in there before and maybe I'll get some more work. Hopefully tomorrow is a better day! Hope your day goes well. Mike |
