Later, I'll head down to Heritage Nursery, Nakusp B.C. and deliver my most recent Hand Carved Burl Bowls. All for now, I'll let you know the results of my experiment and post some photos of the bench when it is done.

Just did some paperwork. New business cards, sales tags and poster. I'm not too quick at this and have to get going now as I have sat long enough to get a leg cramp. Got the Oak Bench glued together today. Now I'll see how my fumed oak finish worked out on my sample pieces. I've never tried it before so its all learning. Oak fumed in amonia is supposed to go to a nice brown like craftsman style furniture. The finish is a chemical change to the wood and not just a surface stain. From what I've read on the subject, the best results are on European oak and some North American oak goes kind of greenish instead of brown. I'll get out to the shop and see how it turned out.

Finally got the Coffee Tables done. They posed a few challenges I hadn't anticipated when I took on the order but I think they worked out in the end. After all, for some one like me, each different project teaches me something I wasn't aware of when I first planned. I guess 'that which doesn't kill you makes you stronger' or in this case, better able to see potential issues on the next job, so its all good.
Hand Carved Cedar Burl Bowl, 16in x 13in x 6in Hand Carved Fir Burl Bowl 21in x 12in x 4in Well back to work today. Some more photos of Burl Bowls I just finished. Feeling better after a good sleep so back to the tables. Saw something I wasn't happy with so I'll correct that and hope to photograph the tables later today. All for now
Mike A bit of a slow day today. Not much going right. The coffee maker had a melt down and spewed coffee and grounds all around forcing a major clean up and a cleaning cycle on the machine before some caffiene could be made and consumed.
I slept badly, must have lain wrong and my back is messed up with nerve pain all down my leg. I know what it is but it just has to go away on its own. Its too cold in the shop to apply more finish to projects even if I could move around freely. I have two Hand Carved Burl Bowls finished but I have to go to Nelson for a dental appointment so I cannot deliver them to Heritage Nursery, Nakusp B.C. On the plus side, the coffee tables are finished and I'll post photos tomorrow. Too sore and too late to get photos today. Also while I'm in Nelson I'm picking up some plants for Heritage Nursery from Georama Nursery. I've put plant stands in there before and maybe I'll get some more work. Hopefully tomorrow is a better day! Hope your day goes well. Mike Made a trip to Heritage Nursery, Nakusp BC yesterday and dropped off a few Hand Carved Burl Bowls for sale this year. I think I'll load up some furniture today and take it down. Being at the nursery got me thinking about spring and gardening. I have a stack of clear cedar plank I've been moving around for years and I think this is the year it gets used. As soon as I finish what I'm doing now I will build some chairs, benches, trellis, obelisks planters and planter benches. Maybe a table or two as well.
I'm just getting used to this social media thing and my sister-in-law tells me I have to Blog, Tweet, advertise and generally keep my business out in public. I want business but I'm also aware that my business is small and I'm restricted by the fact that all the work is done by me alone. Sometimes I get worried that my success could put me in a position where I have to rush and do a lesser job than I want to. Somebody is reading this (I think) as my web site is getting more hits. Please look at my web site gallery and give me some feedback as to what you think of what I've done so far and what you would like to see in the future, either in the blog or in photos of items I can build. Much appreciated Mike A new year of seasonal sales. HERITAGE NURSERY in NAKUSP opens today for 2014. Last year was a learning experience for myself and the nursery owners, Carla and Bill. I had some success in their Gallery but I think we all thought it could be better. Maybe with better advertising and media networking we'll all do better. Yesterday was a pretty good day in the shop. I got some finish on projects and also finished sealing up a few unfinished parts of the shop as the finish dried. Not much gardening as the weather was bad, but it just meant more shop work. Think I'll take the finished Carved Bowl down to the Gallery and assess what I have to what they need. I want to put in more small items for sale as well as furniture.
I hope this is a good season of sales for all of us and a good year for all of you. Please check out the Gallery at Heritage Nurseries, Nakusp B.C. The Telus man came yesterday and installed my tv cable in the shop. This may seem extravegant but I confess that I can be easily distracted and sometimes get caught by tv programing. Now I can have my programs and still work. It gets lonely in the shop by yourself and it is good to have company even if it is Judge Judy. I would rely on my cats, but one is not a 'shop cat' and the other is demanding and doesn't allow work. Today I start applying final finish to two bowls and two coffee tables. As well, I hope to get the oak table top glued up today. Any spare time and my wife has plans for me in the garden.
Just finishing up a coffee table and end table and have started an oak dining table, bench and lazy susan. It may not be the biggest table I've ever built but it is definitely the HEAVIEST I've ever done. It'll either kill me or build up my muscles. When we go to deliver, everyone had better have their Wheaties.
Well I'm finally working in my new shop. It feels like 3 steps forward and 2 back as I locate the items I need after the move. Got started on a set of tables, a coffee trable and end table and my planer motor cooked up. Back to work now after the motor was rewound. After this I have an oak dining table, bench and lazy susan. Feels good to be building things other than the shop building. I'll have more photos as I get further along.
